George E. Johnson, the iconic founder of Afro Sheen, is set to release his long-awaited memoir at the age of 97. Titled “Afro Sheen: How I Revolutionized an Industry with the Golden Rule, from Soul Train to Wall Street,” the book recounts his incredible journey from launching a $250 business in 1954 to creating one of the world’s largest Black-owned companies. His brand, Johnson Products, became a cultural staple, notably sponsoring Soul Train and becoming the first Black-owned company traded on the American Stock Exchange. With the help of author Hilary Beard, Johnson’s memoir highlights his belief in integrity, community, and the power of dreams.

Legacy Honored

The memoir also pays tribute to Johnson’s late wife and co-founder, Joan Johnson, who passed away in 2019. Together, they built a company rooted in both innovation and cultural pride. Their son, Eric, reflects on Joan’s pivotal role, noting her dedication to fostering trust and success within the brand. Johnson’s epiphany in 2021 led him to share his story, driven by a divine message to inspire future generations. It was realesed on February 4, 2025, the book is a celebration of resilience, collaboration, and the enduring impact of Black entrepreneurship.
